What an amazing election. So many people exercised their right to vote this time. We have finally elected an African-American candidate to be our next president. Some say it was a perfect storm of circumstances: stupid unprovoked war, devastating economic downturn, religious extremism taking over the country, corrupt political system. Barak Obama has class, great intelligence, an excellent education, a wonderful speaking voice and he's like a rock. He didn't talk about his color, but millions of people are so inspired when they see a brown skinned man who will lead this nation forward.
However, California Proposition 8 passed. The last votes are still being counted and it is close, but barring a miracle, the California constitution will have an amendment declaring that marriage is between one man and one woman. It is a shameful shameful thing that so much money and so many votes went toward denying one segment of the population the basic right of marriage. I hope this doesn't last long. I hope the basic logic of civil laws will prevail in the end. I know there will always be fear and hatred of differences that are expressed in gender roles, but the law should not cater to the fears.
